Rotary Phone Dial

A vintage rotary dial set in a bottle-green bakelite body: a cream enamel number plate with the digits and exchange letters printed under the holes, a turned chrome finger wheel with ten holes, a curved chrome finger stop, and a number card ("Elmwood 5-0193") under a clear dome in the middle. Put a finger in a hole and turn the wheel clockwise to the stop; let go and it runs home at a steady governed speed, a pulse dot filling for each number that passes the stop, and the dialled digit drops onto the paper tape above in typewriter type, grouped like a phone number. Letting go before the stop returns the wheel without dialling; holding the card clears the tape. "Rotary Dial" and the card's number sit above the tape, "Turn a hole to the stop · Hold the card to clear" below.
