Bakery Flap Board
A split-flap menu board in a small bakery: a walnut-grain case with a brass rim and brass screws, under the bakery's name and a slowly drifting strip of bakery photos. Sixteen charcoal flaps per line, each split across the middle with two brass hinge pins, spell the time in words on two lines and four menu lines below, the names in cream and the prices in amber. When a line changes, every flap falls through the alphabet to its new letter with the real two-half flip, the columns setting off one after another and each landing with a small bounce; now and then the time gives way to a notice such as "Second bake at half nine". Tapping a menu line flips it to the next item and grows the line into a cream card with the item's photo, name, a line about it, its price and when it came out of the oven.
