Iron Filings Magnet
"Field Notes — Magnetism": a sheet of graph paper on a walnut desk, with 900 iron filings scattered over it and a red and blue bar magnet faintly visible underneath. The filings line up along the magnet's field lines and crowd towards its poles. Drag the magnet and they swing after it, the far ones a moment later; pull a second magnet in from the edge to see two north poles push their fields apart, or tap a magnet to flip it and watch the lines join up. The field at the page's centre and the number of poles are read out at the bottom.
